Petals of Peace

http://www.PetalsOfPeace.com/

The Petals of Peace project invites children of all ages to fold a paper lotus flower as a gesture of peace and friendship to other children. The lotus flowers are symbolic of Petals of Peace blossoming within our local community and throughout the world.

This global project is a hands on approach to support children’s values and ideals and to promote a more peaceful world. Petals of Peace tries to encourage tolerance, human rights and compassion. This is extending a hand of friendship to other innocent children less fortunate.

In every way the children are the innocent ones, if we can all contribute to developing harmony and international understanding, the world’s children will look forward to a brighter future.

I went to James A. Garfield Elementary School on May 15th, 2009 and had the kids from kindergarten to 6th grade do the Petals of Peace project during their Right to Read Week with the theme of "Explore the World through a Book." The person in charge of the Right to Read Week emailed the international students (including me) at my college for help in volunteering at the school that day, so I introduced to her the Petals of Peace project and asked if the school would like to do it. She agreed and so along with a couple of friends, I brought the Petals of Peace project to the school. I prepared a package of information about the project, including a children's book (available on the Petals of Peace website) about the unfortunate story of a Chinese girl, whose dad died from the persecution of the spiritual practice Falun Gong when she was only a year old. After telling her story to the kids, we taught them how to fold paper lotus flowers as a symbol of peace and hope for the unfortunate kids in China.

Here's some information about the Petals of Peace project: The Petals of Peace project invites children of all ages to fold a paper lotus flower as a gesture of peace and friendship to other children. What do you think about?

Many people feel that killing convicted murderers will satisfy their need for justice and/or vengeance. They feel that certain crimes are so heinous that executing the criminal is the only reasonable response.
I think that permitting premeditated murder is totally unacceptable, even if committed by the state.
Capital punishment lowers the value of human life as seen by the general population and brutalizes society. It is based on a need for revenge.
